Travel Stories
My passion for travel was ignited the summer after I
graduated from high school. I had saved my babysitting
money for several years for the opportunity to take a
Transatlantic cruise with Holland America Lines and stay
with my friend's family in the U.K. I was accompanied by
my friend, an exchange student from England who was
staying with one of my neighbors.
After college, I got a job with Project Hope. It's an
organization that refitted a retired Navy hospital vessel and
carried health care professionals to provide medical care to
those in need around the world. These life-changing
adventures put me on the path to a career in travel.
When I read our article "An Open Book" (page 22),
which highlights the various travel chapters in our life -
I realized something. I've been with AAA through all my
chapters! This issue of Traveler is a sweet reminder of all the
fantastic experiences that have made up my "book."
Our feature "Culture Trip" (on page 10) makes me pine
for a return visit to Croatia - one of my absolute favorite
destinations. Plitvice Lakes National Park was like nothing
I've ever seen. Its numerous over-water walkways lead you to a seemingly countless number of waterfalls. We
also visited Dubrovnik. I was never into the Game of Thrones until I went there. Almost every stop was the
backdrop for a scene in the show. Upon my return home, I promptly watched every episode and delighted in
being able to say "I was there!" It's such a beautiful part of the world that's worth a visit any time of the year.
And there are so many ways to experience it - by land or by sea.
Ireland is one of those dream trips I hope to add to my book. I've visited the southern part of the country,
but not the rest. My family is Scotch-Irish and Irish, so the "Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way" scenic drive (page
25) seems like a fitting way to explore the land of my ancestors.
I've always been a theme park fan, as well as a Harry Potter geek, and the new ride Hagrid's Magical
Creatures Motorbike Adventure at Universal's The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is right up my alley. You
can read about all the new fall attractions and events at Universal Orlando Resort on page 12.
From expeditions along Norway's coast with Hurtigruten (page 18) to road trips across America in search
of the best mac and cheese (page 30), there's so much out there to see (and taste!) for every stage of life. Your
