Malin Head
STUNNING SEASCAPES
Brendan Vacations offers an eight-day itinerary that
covers the middle to north portion, as well as a stint
inland along the River Shannon. Favorite stops in the
Northern Headlands include Malin Head, the route's
northernmost tip, and Sliabh Liag (Slieve League).
Sea-sculpted and shaped by storms, both spots feature
dramatic landscapes ideal for a contemplative walk or
for spying relics from the past, such as The Tower, a
derelict signal station. Remote, granite sea cliffs define
Sliabh Liag, where steep, edge-of-the-world drops take
your breath away. In Donegal, shop for tweed, produced
locally for centuries in colors inspired by the stunning
environment.
South of the headlands region lies the Surf Coast,
revered for its epic surfing (hence its name) and other
outdoor activities. Brendan Vacations points visitors
toward a prominent bicycling path as part of its selfdrive package. The Great Western Greenway follows
an old railway that closed in 1937 but gained new life
as a 26-mile scenic recreation trail between Westport
Connemara National Park
and Achill Island. Active adventurers find the balance
between picturesque overlooks into wave-kissed coves and
vast views of green hills well worth the moderate pedals
between villages: Westport, Newport, Mulranny (known
for its heather-dotted hillsides where feral Old Irish goats
occasionally graze) and Achill Island.
Back in the car, follow the Wild Atlantic Way
southward to enter the Bay Coast. Breathe in the briny
air as you bask in this wilderness of rocky coastline and
translucent inlets, including sparkling Galway Bay. The
city of Galway, situated on the water and dubbed the
City of the Tribes, lures with its tasty food and vibrant
arts scene. Walk the cobbled streets of the Latin Quarter
to poke into artisanal boutiques or restaurants featuring
local seafood plucked from waters near the Salmon Weir
Bridge or beneath the Spanish Arch. Be sure to take a day
(or more) to travel beyond the city center, specifically to
Connemara National Park, home to Connemara ponies,
but also a completely different landscape than what has
come before. After miles of exposed, wave-worn cliffs,
the national park offers bits of shade on walks through
woodlands and easy to challenging hikes among 12
prominent quartzite peaks known as the Twelve Bens.
