Returning to Travel

While we're still challenged by the pandemic, I sense hope on the horizon.
Vaccinations have provided increased optimism leading AAA Members to
tell us that their intentions to travel in 2021 are growing. Many have
already ventured out to discover their own backyards with visits to state
and national parks or to take on road trips to lesser visited destinations.
AAA has been helping travelers travel safely and enjoyably for
more than 100 years. When I think about returning to travel, I
believe it's important to make informed decisions, and to be prepared
and protected. AAA is here with the resources and tools to let you do
more and worry less as you plan and head out on vacation.
In the last year, my husband and I traveled very enjoyably in Michigan, Tennessee and Florida. Sometimes we
flew to our destination and at other times we drove. We used AAA Diamond ratings and AAA Inspector's Best
of Housekeeping designations to choose our accommodations and we followed health and safety protocols.
Within this issue you'll find drivable destinations you can visit now, should you choose. We've also
included far-flung locales to inspire you as you dream and plan your return to travel.
Our " Best of the West " feature (page 18) showcases ways to discover (or re-discover) the American West
with our preferred travel partner, Trafalgar. Zion National Park is one of the most beautiful places I've ever
been; its grandeur is amazing any time of year. Our February visit provided a glimpse of swirls of red rock
blanketed with snow, while our visit in May offered stunning contrasts of blue skies and red rocks.
If you dream of warm breezes and turquoise waters, don't miss our article " The Islands Are Calling " (page
8). It highlights the idyllic qualities and luxury accommodations that await you in Turks and Caicos. Each
island and cay in this tropical archipelago offers a unique experience for every traveler. You'll find a resort
perfectly suited to your needs and budget with our preferred travel partner, Travel Impressions. I can attest
from my experience that Turks and Caicos is easily accessible, and the scuba diving, snorkeling and other
watersports are ideal. Make sure to savor my local favorite during your visit - conch fritters!
" Going Dutch " (page 12) highlights one of my favorite places, Amsterdam. It's such a walkable city with an incredible
range of culture, history, art and food. When in Amsterdam, don't miss a chance to experience rijsttafel. It's an elaborate
meal of Indonesian dishes that evolved during the Dutch colonial era. During my most recent visit, I toured the Anne
Frank House. Prior to my trip I read The Diary of Anne Frank and it brought the experience to life in a moving way.
Have you compiled a " post-pandemic travel list " over the past several months? I certainly have. My
husband and I are captivated by the Isle of Skye. Our planned trip to Scotland last year was shelved, but we
look forward to visiting before long. There are so many ways to experience this charming country - small
group guided vacations, private guided travel or a self-drive trip. We're planning a customized private guided
vacation. Knowing you have a private driver allows you to travel in your bubble in a comfortable way. " Aye,

I hope this issue of Traveler inspires you and re-ignites your passion for travel. When travel restrictions
subside and we're able to move freely across the map, I believe we'll all explore and experience our world
with a renewed energy and purpose.
