It's also a national museum, open for
the public to explore its rooms, restored
to the way they looked in the 17th
century, as well as its collection of arms
and armor, utensils and art.
Of course the Dutch are famous for
their tulips, and the Amsterdam Tulip
Museum presents interactive exhibits
that describe the flower's journey from
its origins in the Himalayas to today's
suburban gardens. You'll learn about
tulip mania in the 1630s, when the
tulip trade created a market bubble
that led to one of history's most
famous market crashes. The gift shop,
besides offering myriad tulip-themed
items - linens, glassware, jewelry,
books and handbags - is a good
source for tulip bulbs.
Savor the flavors
As a trading hub for hundreds of
years, Amsterdam has long been a place
where various cultures converge. The
food scene reflects those multicultural
influences. Everyone will find
something to love, from internationally
inspired, cutting-edge cuisine to
traditional meat and potatoes.
Local favorites include the Dutch
pancakes called pannenkoeken, eaten
throughout the day, with savory
toppings such as smoked salmon or
sweet options such as fruit or chocolate
or stroop: a thick, caramel-like syrup.
Another Dutch favorite is the humble
french fry, thick cut and fried to golden
brown perfection, offered with an array
of toppings. (Mayonnaise is preferred by
most locals.) They are sold on nearly
every street corner, but locals flock to
the stall of Wil Graanstra Friteshuis, a
family-run business that has been frying
in the same location since 1956.
Herring stands also proliferate
throughout the city, and eating at one is
a quintessential Dutch experience. The
fish is salt-cured and then pickled,
served along with finely diced onions
and sliced pickles. Locals are known to
throw their heads back and lower the
whole fish into their mouths.
You'll see bitterballen, breaded
deep-fried meatballs, on many menus;
try them with fillings like shrimp,
bouillabaisse and truffles at the
Foodhallen, an indoor food market in
Amsterdam's quirky Oud-West
neighborhood. Besides such local
specialties, its 20-some stands feature
international specialties from tacos to
dim sum to French pastries.
After a day of tasting and exploring,
refuel with a beverage - beer has been
important in Dutch life since at least
the Middle Ages, so you might want to
order a Heineken or Amstel or
something from the city's active craft
beer scene. Sip your cold one at one of
Amsterdam's popular rooftop bars
- there's one with a pool, one with a
herb garden and chickens, one that
features Europe's highest swing - while
the sun sets on the unique Amsterdam
