Lafayette, Louisiana
Of the 36 U.S. cities and counties named for French and American hero, the Marquis de Lafayette, Lafayette,
Louisiana, is definitely the place that will show you the best time. Located about 135 miles west of New Orleans
on the Vermilion River, Lafayette is a stirring gumbo of Cajun and Creole cultures, brought to life in the city's
artwork, music and food.
Cajun Music and Culture
It's a sultry Saturday night, and Terry & the Zydeco
Bad Boys are tearing it up at the Blue Moon Saloon
in downtown Lafayette. This is just one of the hot
spots in this musical town. Another is Pont Breaux's
Cajun Restaurant, where waltzers and two-steppers
dance to live Cajun music, Thursday through
Sunday evenings.
Cajun forefathers who were expulsed by the British
in what is now Nova Scotia settled the southern
Louisiana countryside in the late 1700s. It's their
culture that defines Cajun country, from the music to
the food and the lilting French language. History
comes to life with a visit to Vermilionville Historic
Village, a living outdoor folk museum that is akin to a
Cajun/Creole version of Colonial Williamsburg.

The Great Outdoors
Drive just outside of town to fall under the spell of
the giant live oaks, draped in Spanish moss and the
cypress and tupelo trees that line the bayous and
swamps. Country roads follow the winding Teche
(pronounced tesh), the state's longest bayou, and
meander through villages where cypress cabins
emerge from the water on stilts and moored fishing
boats ripple the still waters.
Make time to wander downtown Lafayette, a blend
of Victorian, Acadian, art deco and modern
buildings, cafes and shops centered on the
intersection of Main and Jefferson streets. Look up
to see colorful outdoor murals located at the
Children's Museum of Acadiana, at Jefferson and
Garfield streets and other spots.
Eat Up
When you get hungry, head to Scratch Farm
Kitchen for breakfast or lunch, a friendly farm to table
cafe that supports local growers and makers, serving
fresh fare like seasonal salads, tartines and eggs
served with country ham and local hibiscus butter.
Later on, tuck into duck and andouille gumbo at
Charley G's, Creole bronzed shrimp at Café
Vermilionville and red beans and rice at Dwyer's
Cafe. After dinner, drive by the Cathedral of St. John
the Evangelist to see the mammoth nearly fivecentury old St. John's Oak - a gorgeous reminder of
just how deep local roots can go.
