With its year-round mild Mediterranean climate, Sonoma County is an ideal place to visit any season. At 1,500
square miles (larger than Rhode Island), Sonoma County is a mostly rural bounty of scenic valleys, beaches
and rugged coastlines, rivers, forests and mountains. A few fun cities and towns offer great dining, shopping
and lodging options.
The area touts more than 425 wineries (plus some
superb breweries) stretched over 18 American
Viticultural Areas (AVAs, or appellations). Travelers
can't help but discover great wines and vineyards.
But Sonoma offers visitors much more than wine.
For instance, Safari West is a wild animal game
reserve often referred to as " The Sonoma Serengeti. "
Established in 1993 by owners Peter and Nancy
Lang, today the 400-acre reserve boasts more than
1,000 African animals including giraffe, rhino, zebra,
cape buffalo, along with a vast array of exotic birds
from around the world. Safari trucks driven by skillful
guides take guests near and through various
habitats. Visitors can stay overnight, glamping in
upscale tents, complete with African art. Safari West
strives to educate people about conservation and
animal welfare while offering an amazing adventure
for the whole family.
A Sonoma County attraction of a different sort is
the Charles M. Schulz Museum. Here visitors find all
things Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the gang along
with information and artifacts about their creator,
Charles M. Schulz. This fascinating museum features
rotating exhibits, films and videos and a children's
creative learning center.
The brand new Montage Healdsburg resort is set
on a lush 258-acre property with posh bungalowstyle
accommodations overlooking mountain, forests
and vineyards. Or try the Gaige House + Ryokan, a
tranquil, Japanese style inn located in Glen Ellen.
For dining, the choices are almost limitless.
However, Blue Ridge Kitchen is a great choice. It's
located at The Barlow, a revitalized market district in
Sebastopol dedicated to Sonoma's agricultural past.
For wineries, seek out some of Sonoma's largesse. A
fabulous under-the-radar spot is Croix Estate, created
by famed vintner Kirk Venge. Don't miss Alexander
Valley Vineyards, home to one of Sonoma's earliest
pioneers, Cyrus Alexander. Stop in at Francis Ford
Coppola Winery (pictured above), an over-the-top but
eye-popping experience or head to Flowers Vineyards
& Winery, about 15 miles east of the coast.
