SOUTH FLORIDA AND
THE KEYS
South Florida is a tropical tapestry of
cultures and experiences that provide
visitors with a variety of ways to play in
the sun. If you're looking for adventure,
head to Everglades National Park for an
airboat tour through the wetlands to
see alligators, snakes and a wide array
of birds. Culture aficionados will love
exploring Miami. Little Havana is full
of great food and surprising gems like
Domino Park (aka Máximo Gómez
Park), where locals play dominos (very
competitively, I might add) surrounded
by mosaic tilework and murals. Nearby,
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is a
must-see for everyone. This National
Historic Landmark mansion on
Biscayne Bay is surrounded by 10 acres
of meticulously maintained gardens
with fountains and sculptures.
Making your way to the Keys, you'll
notice quite a difference from the glitz
and vibrancy of Miami and South
Florida proper. In Key West, chickens
roam the sidewalks alongside tourists at
an unhurried pace. Taking a stroll
through the Ernest Hemingway Home
and Museum is simply a delight. Even if
you're not familiar with the literary icon
and his stories, the house and its gardens
are lovely, and the legendary six-toed
cats are fascinating and friendly.
No matter where you start your day,
be mindful to end it on a sunset cruise
so you can relax on the water as the sky
transforms.
