Frazier History Museum
Images of fast horses and feathered hats,
fried chicken and, of course, bourbon come
to mind when you think about " Derby City. "
But there's so much more to love.
Founded in 1778, Kentucky's largest city blends
Southern historic charm with a contemporary vibe.
Book a stay at The Grady Hotel, a 51-room boutique
located on Main Street along Museum Row.
Commissioned in 1883, the building housed J.B.
Wilder's apothecary, where the pharmacist concocted
medicinal bourbon and other elixirs. Wild Swann, the
lower-level restaurant, pays homage to the SwannAbram
Hat Company, famed for making Kentucky
Derby hats here. Order a signature Old Fashioned, and
try the shrimp and grits or beef short rib rigatoni.
In the morning, stop by the Wiltshire Bakery and
Café for one of their delicious breakfast sandwiches
before heading out for a morning stroll along the
Ohio River. The Big Four Bridge guides pedestrians
and cyclists across the river to Indiana.
Frazier History Museum, the starting point of the
Kentucky Bourbon Trail, houses weaponry,
interesting textiles and a prohibition-era bottle of
whiskey. Explore the KMAC Museum (Kentucky
Museum of Art and Craft), which spotlights American
folk art and more. For sports fans, the Louisville
Slugger Museum & Factory and Muhammad Ali
Center ( " The Greatest " called Louisville home) are
also within a couple blocks' walk.
Pockets of charm pop up all across Louisville. On
the east side, in Butchertown, grab a fellow foodie
and stop by Naive Kitchen + Bar for a five-course
" omnivore " tasting or hit up Hi-Five Doughnuts for
crazy concoctions like the Kentucky Fried Buttermilk
Chicken Doughnut Sandwich.
In the hip NuLu district, you'll find boutique shops,
craft breweries and distilleries, live music and art
galleries. Locals rave about Seviche, where Chef
Anthony Lamas has gained national praise for his
marriage of Latin classics with Southern ingredients.
Southeast of downtown, Germantown's Hammerheads
is a staple. Try the catfish tacos, elk burger or roastedduck
sandwich. While in the Highlands, stop in Quills
Coffee for a house-roasted brew.
And don't leave town without stopping at the
historic 1923 Brown Hotel for an iconic " Hot Brown, "
an open-faced turkey sandwich topped with bacon
and Mornay sauce.
