Go Cross Country
The cross-country road trip is something of a rite of passage,
Wall, South Dakota
and whether you're inspired by Jack Kerouac's novel, " On the
Road, " Willie Nelson's song, " On the Road Again, " or your own
wanderlust, there's a beauty to driving from one end of America
to the other. Rather than head from the Atlantic to the Pacific
and back, why not put a twist on the cross-country trip with a
route from Canada to Mexico? On either coast, the Pacific
Coast Highway and U.S. Route 1 will lead you on tours of
sweeping land- and seascapes and past some American icons.
Golden Gate Bridge? Statue of Liberty? Check and check.
Following the Mississippi from Minnesota to Louisiana, the
Great River Road is rich with sights, sounds and flavors of the
heartland. Then there's also U.S. Route 83, which will put you
on a straight shot due south from the Canadian border in North
Dakota to the Veterans International Bridge in Brownsville,
Texas. This was the first route connecting Canada and Mexico,
so you'll be rolling down a highway steeped in history on this
massive, memorable drive.

Let Someone Else Do the Driving
Is it still a road trip if someone else does the driving? Amtrak Vacations thinks so. A
road-trip-by-rail is just what you need to take in the scenery and spend time in some
amazing places, especially if you're always the driver. Routes touch every corner of
the U.S. and skirt along the mountains and prairies of southern Canada. So,
whether you're out to experience the European feel of Montreal or marvel at the
sky-stretching landscapes of the American West, you can ride along in comfort and

One option is to ride Amtrak's City of New Orleans train and take in the sights
and sounds of Chicago, Ill., Memphis, Tenn., and New Orleans, La., on a trip
focused on the roots of American music: Jazz, blues and rock 'n roll. Or perhaps you'd
rather take an epic, month-long journey across the continent on a series of train
routes, ticking many boxes on any domestic must-see list. There of plenty of itineraries
from which to choose. There are also short train ride options to such places as the
luxurious Greenbrier resort in West Virginia, a getaway to Glacier National Park,
Niagara Falls or the Rocky Mountains or even a trip to our nation's capital.
