The journey along Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way presents the Emerald Isle as many
people picture the country in their minds -rolling green hills, wave-carved cliffs
and pub-dotted hamlets. But images from films and magazines are not enough;
you need to experience it yourself.
Kylemore Abbey, Connemara
Luckily, the beauty of this 1,600-mile stretch
can be savored in sections on a self-drive
adventure. The route hugs Ireland's western
coastline between County Cork and County
Donegal, so there's plenty of untamed room to
roam. The drive's official website breaks the
route into 14 stages-each one unique and nicely
paced. AAA partner Brendan Vacations suggests
a 15th itinerary, which begins and ends in Dublin,
thus adding the perfect dose of the capital city.
Plus, you get to mosey through the Hidden
Heartlands, a central region where stream-side
trails meander through lush forests and villages
flank the River Shannon.
While driving north to Donegal to pick up the
Wild Atlantic Way, stop at The Shed Distillery in
Drumshanbo. Famous for its Drumshanbo Single
Pot Still Irish Whiskey and Drumshanbo
Gunpowder Irish Gin, it's the first distillery to
open in the region in more than 100 years. Book
a guided tour to see the distilling process, from
mash in Medieval copper pot stills to tastings in
the botanical glasshouse.
Donegal itself claims three of the 15 designated
Signature Points of the Wild Atlantic Way. Slieve
League boasts some of the highest oceanfront
cliffs in Europe. Malin Head, with its Napoleonicera
watchtower and rocky coastline punctuated
by steep ravines and mountain ledges, provided
a backdrop for a number of scenes in Star Wars:
The Last Jedi. And Fanad Head is known for its
iconic lighthouse.
Connemara Ponies
Equally breathtaking, but quite different,
Connemara, and its namesake national park, is
known for its austere landscape of peat bogs,
grasslands, woodlands and the scenic Twelve
Bens mountains. Here, compact wild ponies toss
their heads as the howling coastal winds catch in
