GREEK ODYSSEY
awaits

Situated between the translucent-blue Ionian and Aegean seas,
where people built monuments to mythological gods and goddesses,
spreads the birthplace of Western civilization. Here, early Greeks
originated democracy, Socrates and his protege Plato debated moral
philosophy, and the Olympic Games began. Today's Greece displays
that millennia-old culture while simultaneously welcoming visitors
seeking relaxation on its scenic islands.
Acroplolis, Athens
ANCIENT HISTORY, Athens and the Acropolis
For more than 2,500 years, Greece's sprawling
capital city of Athens has been a hub of
activity, and it remains an epicenter of
cosmopolitan urban life to this day. It's also
an unintentional living history
museum, due to the
significant number of relics
from the country's ancient
and classical periods.
The most recognizable, and
likely one of the top reasons
many land tours begin and
end in Athens, is the Acropolis.
First built as a fortress in the
13th century BCE, UNESCO
deemed the Acropolis as " the
The iconic Parthenon is what lures most
visitors to climb the marble steps (or take an
elevator) to the top, but a number of other
monuments leave you in awe of the detail
and craftsmanship. The Porch of the
Caryatids, part of the
Erechtheion temple, is where
sculptors transformed six
columns into the figures of
women. One of the site's most
well-preserved monuments is
Temple of Athena Nike, an honor
to the goddess Athena for her
role as protector and defender
of Athens.
Archofhadrian, Athens
most striking and complete ancient Greek
monumental complex still existing in our
times " and designated it a UNESCO World
Heritage site in 1987.
Also located nearby are the
Agora, Old Royal Palace, Temple of
Olympian Zeus, and Hadrian's Arch, which was
built to honor Roman Emperor Hadrian. These
and other architectural ruins stand in contrast
to how modern Athens has developed.
