TRAVEL BUZZ Real ID Deadline Extended Haven't got a Real ID yet? The good news is the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is pushing back the deadline to May 7, 2025, giving states two more years to issue the enhanced form of identification that meets federal security standards established by the Real ID Act passed by Congress in 2005. The Real ID version of a driver's license looks just like a traditional one but has a star insignia in the top corner of the card. First-time Real IDs require an in-person visit to any Department of Motor Vehicles and requires additional documentation from an approved list. When the extension ends, travelers can no longer use a standard driver's license or ID card as identification at U.S. airports to board domestic flights or at secure federal facilities. A Real ID-compliant driver's license or another form of federally approved identification, such as a valid passport or a Global Entry ID, will be essential except for children under age 18 traveling with Real ID-carrying companions. Statue of Liberty Crown Now Open It's a bragging rights experience to peer down on New York Harbor from the Statue of Liberty's crown- not only for the spectacular views, but as a reward for climbing the hundreds of steps to get there. (An elevator is only accessible to the statue's pedestal level.) Consisting of a small landing with 25 windows, the crown is the copper structure's highest viewing point open to the public. Closed to tours since March 2020, it has recently reopened. The only official concessionaire is Statue City Cruises, and tickets ($24.30 general admission to crown) must be reserved well in advance online or by phone 877-LADY TIX (877-523-9849).
