ON THE ROAD
Serene vistas draw
visitors to Marys Peak.

DAY IN THE PARK

Fields
awash with
wildflowers

The picturesque meadows surrounding
Marys Peak, the highest point in
Oregon's Coast Range, draw scores of
visitors in the mild-weather months
between May and September. But
there's no better time to visit than
early in the season, when the fields of
spiky green grass and rock gardens
scattered about are aglow with thousands of blossoming wildflowers.
Hiking is the go-to activity on
Marys Peak, and the 1.6-mile
Meadowedge Trail is one of the most
popular jaunts. It loops around the
peak's flora-covered meadow and provides easy access to the half-mile
Summit Trail, which takes explorers to
the very top. On a clear day, it's possible
to see the Pacific Ocean to the west
and the volcanic peaks of the Cascade
mountain range-including Mount
Rainier in Washington and Mount
McLoughlin in Oregon-to the east.

can traverse the mountain biking trails
when they open for the season on
May 15. Not all trails permit wheeled
vehicles, but several do allow them,
including the North Ridge Trail, one
of the park's challenging routes, which
climbs more than 2,000 feet in 6.4
miles, and the East Ridge Trail, which
drops nearly 1,200 feet in 2.4 miles
under the cover of towering trees.
In case Marys Peak has more
must-dos than you can fit into one
day, there is a six-site campground set
among the cedar and fir forest near the
park's day use area. Reservations are
not accepted, so plan to arrive early
and have a backup plan in case you
can't snag a spot. And take note: These
campsites are for the rugged camper;
water is not available on-site.

Fans of the natural sciences can
learn more about Marys Peak through
a series of six new videos by the U.S.
Forest Service and the Marys Peak
Alliance in partnership. The short
films focus on subjects such as the
rain forests found on the peak and the
relationship between the indigenous
Kalapuya tribe and the local geography.
Check out the videos at the U.S. Forest
Service YouTube channel.
After a day on the mountain,
enjoy outdoor dining or takeout
from the offerings in nearby Corvallis.
