WEEKENDER

Coos Bay,
Oregon
↘ The southern coast of Oregon
offers a taste of the outdoors.
Surrounded by water and
mountains, and marbled
with a rich industrial spirit,
the three maritime communities of Oregon's bay area-
Charleston, Coos Bay,
and North Bend-captivate
visitors with a triple mix of
history, adventure, and
timeless authenticity.

● Named after a rugged trail
originally blazed by the
Coquille people, 7 Devils
Brewing Company in Coos
Bay is still the go-to place
for Arago Ambers, Chinook
Redds, and other craft
beers. Try the vegetarian
poutine with curds made
by a local creamery. Visit
the pub's new location in
Coos Bay Village when
it opens this summer.
247 S. Second St.
● Head north out of North
Bend and over the historic
Conde B. McCullough
Memorial Bridge to belly up
at Clausen Oysters, the
state's largest oyster farm,
where bivalves get plucked
out of the briny Haynes
Inlet lapping only a few
hundred paces from your
picnic table. Try the giant
silver point oysters that

take multiple seasons to
grow. 66234 N. Bay Rd.
● Vinny's

Smokin' Burgers

in North Bend lives up to
its name with gargantuan
sandwiches such as the
Godfather, a two-patty
burger topped with pulled
pork, and the Best Reuben,
a name that just might be
true. Order a root beer and
wander next door to
Scoops Handmade Ice
Cream to make it a float.

OUTDOORS
● The network of mountain
bike trails known as
Whiskey Run, wending
30-some miles through
forests and open areas in the
Oregon Coast Range south
of town, will wrap up its
third and final phase of trail
building this summer. The
Winchester North loop runs
for 14 miles to challenge
more intermediate riders,
while connector trails can
shorten the distance for
newcomers. Insider tip: If
you stay at the bike-friendly
Itty Bitty Inn, you can
probably talk owner Rik
Villarreal into running a
shuttle for you.

TOP: You'll find dozens of flavors at Scoops Handmade Ice Cream.
BOTTOM: Basin Tackle has all the gear you need for a day of crabbing.
