ROBBIE MCCLARAN

As a leading voice on a variety of transportation issues, AAA conducts research on the
latest automobile technology, including
electric vehicles and self-driving cars. Our
mission is to promote safety, enhance
mobility, and protect the environment.
In a recent AAA survey, nine in 10 electric vehicle owners said that they had at
least one serious concern prior to purchasing their car. But after experiencing EVs for
themselves, 77 percent of those who were
originally concerned about insufficient
range were less or no longer concerned.
AAA Oregon/Idaho had one of the first
mobile units in the country to provide roadside charging of EVs. We've added a
Chevrolet Bolt to our fleet. (I'm always amazed when driving it that I can use the
" Regen " setting and often return with more range than I had when I left.)
Our research shows that electric vehicles have great potential to improve air
quality and relieve pressure on the family budget through lower repair and maintenance costs. But the supporting infrastructure is still in its infancy. We're doing
our part to help this exciting technology move forward by installing EV charging
stations at several of our larger AAA Oregon/Idaho Service Centers.
While enthusiasm for electric vehicles is building, most Americans view autonomous vehicles with a high degree of skepticism. A recent AAA survey found that
nearly nine in 10 drivers say that they would be afraid or unsure about riding in a
car that's not equipped with the traditional steering wheel and pedals.
Drivers do say they're willing to adopt the new technology one step at a time.
AAA has worked with automakers in standardizing the naming of these systems to
reduce consumer confusion. AAA research showed that there were 40 different
names for automatic emergency braking. And 40 percent of Americans expect
driving systems with names like Autopilot, ProPilot, or Pilot Assist to enable the
car to drive by itself, when in fact these systems offer only partial automation.
AAA rigorously tests new vehicles under closed-course and real-world conditions, and we share our findings both to encourage further safety improvements
and to help the public make informed decisions.
Of course, there's also ride-sharing, ride hailing, and nonmotorized options
like bicycling and walking to get around. AAA takes a holistic approach to the
future of our transportation system by working closely with a broad range of legislators and stakeholders to find practical solutions to pressing needs.
How do you feel about new vehicle technology? And are you interested in getting an EV? Please email me at president@AAAoregon.com or write to me at 600

" Vaxication. " " Revenge travel. "
With trending topics like these,
it's safe to say that many
Americans are dreaming of a
long-awaited trip.
And now that the CDC has
announced fully vaccinated
people can travel at low risk to
themselves, you may be ready
to start planning an adventure,
but you should prepare yourself
for a very different experience.
" Things have changed rapidly throughout the pandemic.
That's why it's important to do
your homework and rely on an
experienced travel professional, " says AAA Oregon
Public Affairs Director Marie
Dodds. " Most travel companies
are offering competitive pricing, generous deposit and
refund policies, and other
incentives to motivate you to
book your dream trip. "
Here are a few things to
consider when making your
vacation plans:
Masks. Face coverings are
required on planes, trains,
buses, and other forms of public transportation, and in transportation hubs such as airports
and stations. States, counties,
and cities may also have mask
requirements.
Travel by car. As a convenient
way to isolate from others, road
trips will be appealing to many
travelers.
