AT THE BEDSIDE AACN, Case Western Reserve University Announce Innovative DNP, PhD Collaboration new collaborative program expands access to doctoral education for high acuity and critical care nurses in response to Institute of Medicine recommendations that nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training. “To help AACN members decide whether they would be more interested in becoming acute care clinical leaders through the DNP or clinical scientists by pursuing a traditional PhD, we’ll launch the program in fall 2012 with the health policy course that applies to either degree program,” explains Mary E. Kerr, dean at Case Western Reserve University’s Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing. AACN will host the first course this fall in two intensive weekend sessions at the national office in Aliso Viejo, Calif. Qualified AACN members may enroll as non-degree students. Normally, PhD courses are offered in an on-campus semester format. The DNP uses an executive-education style cohort with on-campus intensive courses, off-site classes around the country and online courses. Case Western Reserve will award special scholarships to AACN members. Members also may qualify for employer-based tuition reimbursement and support such as the Nurse Faculty Loan Program, which forgives up to 85 percent of nurse educators’ loans.
