hat does it mean when a candidate is told they aren't a good cultural fit for
an organization and aren't hired for a position?

Rose Sherman, professor of nursing and director of the Nursing Leadership
Institute at Florida Atlantic University College of Nursing, delves into this
subject in "Hiring for Cultural Fit," on the blog Emerging RN Leader.

She notes that many organizations use screening tools to help them
evaluate applicants for cultural fit: "the glue that holds an organization together." That's why it's a key part of filling an open position.

core beliefs, attitudes
and behaviors.

"Cultural fit is the likelihood that someone will reflect and/or be able to adapt to the core beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors that make up your organization. The result of poor [cultural] fit due to turnover can be costly to an
organization. The data is clear that outside candidates have a higher failure rate than internal ones because of cultural fit
issues," Sherman writes.
The challenge for job applicants is to understand an organization's culture, which requires a lot of preparation, she notes. In
addition, there is a concern that looking for cultural fit could possibly lead to discrimination against candidates and a lack of
diversity.
"It's important to understand that hiring for
cultural fit doesn't mean hiring people who are
all the same. The values and attributes that make
up an organizational culture can and should be
reflected in a richly diverse workforce. Candidates
should have the ability to 'add to the culture' in a
positive way," Sherman writes. d
