Deakins operated the A camera;
Andrew Johnson handled B camera and
Steadicam; and Simon Christidis, ACS
served as the show's underwater camera
operator. The camera package also
included a set of Arri/Zeiss Master
Primes ranging from 16-100mm. The
majority of the camera equipment came
from Arri Media in London, with the
rest provided by Sydney rental house
GearHead.
Deakins has favored the Alexa
since he began shooting digitally in
2011. The camera, he explains, "has a
tonal range, an exposure range and an
aesthetic that I like. There are also practical reasons for using the Alexa.
Unbroken had its share of visual-effects
work, and my experience on Skyfall
showed me just how much the camera
can do without having to put up big
bluescreens - it really gives you a lot of
freedom. Furthermore, Angelina could
see on set just how the image would
look. At the end of the day, she knew
she'd gotten what she wanted."
The B-24 sets were erected at
Village Roadshow Studios in
Queensland while the production was
shooting in Sydney. "Rigging gaffer
Craig Clark was sending photos on his
iPhone," Deakins recounts. "It all
worked out fantastically, but it's nerveracking when you're not physically
there, especially given how massive the

adds, "I think we had every open-face
light in Australia."
The plane was realized with three
separate mockups, all erected on one
soundstage: a 70' fuselage mounted atop
a large gimbal; a cockpit on a smaller
gimbal; and the bombardier section of

the plane, which used the small gimbal
when the cockpit wasn't on it. "We
could be rigging one gimbal while the
other was shooting," Copping reports.
"The fuselage didn't have any wings.
[Special-effects supervisor] Brian Cox
built an exoskeleton to support the
plane, and the [large] gimbal had to
