Anderson Named VES Fellow
Peter Anderson, ASC was recently
named a 2016 Fellow by the Visual Effects
Society at the VES Summit held at the Sofitel Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif. As stated by
the VES, "The title of VES Fellow signifies
that the individual is recognized for earning
an outstanding reputation through
sustained contributions to the art, science or
business of visual effects, as well as through
meritorious service to the Society and the
entertainment industry at large." ASC
members Dennis Muren, Richard Edlund
and William Taylor have previously been
named VES Fellows, along with associate
members Jonathan Erland and Ray
Feeney.

AC Wins Folio: Honors
American Cinematographer won a
Folio: Eddie Award for editorial excellence
during the Folio: Show's awards luncheon,
held at the Hilton Midtown in New York
City on Oct. 31. In the B-to-B Media/Entertainment/Publishing category, Michael
Goldman's article on The Revenant ("Left
for Dead," Jan. '16) took top honors for
Best Single Article. AC earned three additional nominations as well. The February '16
issue, featuring Star Wars: The Force Awakens, earned an honorable mention for Full
Issue, while Iain Marcks' piece on Carol ("A
American Cinematographer

Mid-Century Affair," Dec. '15) and Jay
Holben's piece on A Beautiful Planet ("Time
and Space," June '16) received nods for
Single Article.
Society Hosts Day of Inspiration
The ASC organized an historic event
on Saturday, Oct. 22, when 140 women
cinematographers, operators and other
industry professionals gathered for a "Day
of Inspiration." The event was planned by
the Society's recently formed Vision
Committee, co-chaired by ASC members
Cynthia Pusheck and John Simmons.
Cinelease, Panavision and Sim Group cosponsored the event.
ASC President Kees van Oostrum
introduced the event as a "first" in the
ASC's nearly 100 years of existence, and
pointed out that, of the ASC's approximately 350 active members, only 15 are
women. "Those 15 have done a lot of work
in the industry to change assumptions,"
said van Oostrum, who credits ASC events
coordinator Patty Armacost and president's
assistant Delphine Figueras for their expert
running of the organization.
Pusheck and Simmons welcomed
the packed room. "This is the first event at
the Clubhouse where camerawomen have
outnumbered cameramen," said Pusheck.
She described how Brianne Murphy, the
ASC's first female member, pushed her way
into the union and finally was invited to join
the Society. "We almost named the day
after her," she said. "Seven of us became
members in the last five or six years, so our
numbers in the ASC have doubled. I think
there's a chance we could double our
numbers again in a few years.
"In this business we have our nose
on the grindstone and rarely look up to
celebrate where we are," Pusheck added.
"But don't forget to enjoy the ride. That's
what we want today to be about - to celebrate the women who broke through the
barriers, the ones working today, and to
inspire the next generation."

Kuras Presents Wexler Award
Ellen Kuras, ASC, along with Rita
Taggart Wexler, recently presented the
Haskell Wexler Award for Best Cinematography to Leah Striker, for her work shooting
Shepherds and Butchers, during the 17th
annual Woodstock Film Festival Maverick
Awards Ceremony, which was held at Backstage Studio Productions in Kingston, N.Y.
More than 500 filmmakers, industry
members, community leaders and other
festivalgoers attended the event. From
2002-2015, the late Haskell Wexler, ASC
personally selected the award winner for
best cinematography. For 2016, Kuras
stepped in to select the winner.
