the piece.
Like the film's characters,
Arnold's crew embarked on its own
authentic road trip, logging 11,500
miles with shooting locations in
Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and
North and South Dakota. Director of
photography Robbie Ryan, BSC,
Arnold's frequent collaborator who
partnered with her on films like Fish
Tank (AC Feb. '10) and Wuthering
Heights (AC May '12), joined a skeleton
crew that eschewed the customary trappings of a feature production - there
were no trailers, catering trucks or traditional lighting rigs - in favor of an
organic approach in which the story was
shot in sequence and revealed itself to
the filmmakers along the way.
American Honey employed a
handheld approach and was framed for
the 1.33:1 aspect ratio. The result is a
film of impressive authenticity that
