whom Klein had worked on True Blood.
"I used LiveGrain extensively on the
final season of True Blood, which was the
only season shot digitally," Klein says. A
real-time texturing tool that replicates
the three-dimensional grain structure of
film, LiveGrain became key in terms of
Klein and Salas' desire to apply different
styles to different sections of the show.
"Audience expectation is a grainy,
high-contrast, and sometimes bleach82

bypass or cross-processed reversal look
on the battlefield, and crisp, clean
imagery for home life - so we did
nothing of the sort," Klein explains.
"Using Behar's different grain profiles,
and based on my own experience with
Kodak negative stocks, we applied a
forced-processed, high-speed Vision1
stock [profile] to give some major grain
to our home-life footage. When our
SEALs were in the States, but on base
American Cinematographer

training or preparing for a mission, we
went in the middle with a high-speed
Vision2, normally exposed and
processed negative profile. On the
battlefield, we applied the tightest grain
structure, from a low-speed Vision3
stock."
A final section inspired one of the
show's most audacious looks. "One of
our characters [Richard 'Rip' Taggart],
played by Walton Goggins, had a really
strong storyline that needed something
different," Klein recalls. The scenario
involves Rip - a former navy SEAL -
who as a private contractor is protecting
a group of schoolgirls. They are all
subsequently captured by Boko Haram
and held for ransom in a shipping
container in Nigeria, after which he and
the girls end up in the hands of a homegrown American terrorist. "We grained
all of this with 16mm black-and-white
reversal grain structure, and then desaturated the image in final color," Klein
says.
Behar recalls that Klein's ideas
pushed him to use his creation in ways
