millimeter accuracy," could be assembled
digitally. He adds, "We take detailed
texture and lighting reference, and essentially re-create the environment almost
pixel-perfect in the computer. We wound
up building four houses, front porches and
doorways.
"So the first component in production is on set, seeing the rough composite
live for the cinematographer to judge
framing," Weiss continues. "The next
component is building the asset - the
laser scanning, texturing and lighting. The
third component is the post part - that
final mezzanine-level virtual set, which we
render with proper lighting. We also
provide different mattes for the cinematographer and colorist to give them
control over the final image during [color
grading]."
While The Last Man on Earth did
not use virtual sets for season three, CBS
Digital and other facilities are now using
similar methodologies on other shows,
including ABC's American Housewife,
Weiss points out. While he does not
suggest that the industry is pursuing the
trend in order to eliminate location work
for episodic television, he does think the
pressures of modern television production
leave facilities like CBS Digital with a
mandate to provide virtual-set options like
Parallax.
"People have always thought of
virtual sets more in terms of game shows
or news or sports," Weiss says. "But these
shows illustrate how far the technology
has come. Everybody wants more in a
shorter amount of time, so we are making
the level of quality move closer to the real
world - and for many shows, if we can do
that, it is hard to imagine going back to
being on location all night on a television
schedule, or taking a set and spending
God knows how much to store it in case
