Left, top to bottom: Tungsten balloon lights and a 50' SuperTechocrane were used to capture the film’s biggest set piece, a masquerade ball shot at a museum in Budapest, Hungary. Top right: Poe and his masked paramour, Emily (Alice Eve), try to anticipate the killer’s next move.

moonlight to have a slightly dirty feel,” he explains. 6Ks on Condors were positioned far in the background, but in most cases they made the scene too bright and were not used. The film’s biggest sequence is a masquerade ball, which was staged in a Budapest museum with 40'-high ceilings. The camera starts tight on a guest’s mask, and then pulls back and up to reveal 100 waltzing extras. The move was achieved with a 50' SuperTechnocrane and a remote head; a 10mm Zeiss Ultra Prime was on the camera. Ruhlmann lit the ballroom with two 16K tungsten balloon lights that were skirted, wired to dimmers and placed in the center of the ceiling. “We let the walls fall off and hid some practicals behind pillars and archways, just to [show] some architectural details in the space,” he says. “When we came in for coverage of the actors, we bounced Arri T24s and T12s into 20-by-20foot frames of white muslin, always mindful to keep the light off the walls behind the actors.” He often added a second layer of diffusion, usually Soft Frost, between the bounce and the actor. In the midst of the masquerade ball, a horse appears out of nowhere and crashes into the center of the ballroom, scattering the partygoers. The sequence was shot without any special effects. “The horse and rider practiced a few times before we arrived,” says Ruhlmann with a laugh. “Roger created a wood floor [for the horse] that looked like marble, so it blended right in but wasn’t slippery. Just out of shot was a ramp for the horse to run up and jump off. We used all three cameras that day!” ➣
