Anderson were able to fine-tune the lighting as intuitively as they always had. “There are directors who see lighting merely as a way of decorating the scene, but Paul understands what all cinematographers know: lighting in a movie can speak directly to an audience’s feelings,” observes Elswit. “It’s light, far more than color or composition or any other formal design element, that can make this direct emotional connection.” As an example, Elswit points to scenes set in the apartment of Claudia (Walters). It was extreme, but it works very well. You couldn’t talk some directors into something like that; they might think it’s calling attention to itself. Paul saw it and said, ‘Whoa! That looks like the scene!’” Gaffer Jim Plannette adds, “For those day scenes we had big HMIs coming in through her windows, and

then sometimes we’d bounce a small unit off the ceiling to balance out the exposure.” In a morning scene early in the film, Melora’s father, game-show host Jimmy Gator (Hall), comes to her apartment to speak to her. After
