process, front and rear process, miniature projection, motion control, motion capture, cloud tank, high-resolution computer graphics, large-format filming, fiberoptic lighting, matting techniques and virtual-reality systems. In 1992, he helped to create Cinema Products’ CP65 Showscan system, which brought him a Scientific and TechnicalAward from the Academy. “This is a beautiful thing,” Trumbull said as he accepted the Sawyer Award. “It has been a very long career of collaboration with amazing artists, scientists and engineers — hundreds of them — throughout the years. “I accept this award [as] an affirmation of my work, which is ongoing. There is no specific Academy category for what I do; I’m all over the place. I am currently trying to figure out a way to make a movie that you arein rather than looking at. We are in this amazing time [in terms of] the technology of motion pictures. We’ve all been through careers, and god knows how many tens of thousands of man-years, working with sprocketed film, but we’re now in this big transition [to] digital technologies. It’s time for us to rethink what we’re going to do next, where this will go, and what the options are. I recently heard that moviegoing is at a 16-year low, and that’s not a good sign…. We need to find a way to produce a motion-picture experience that is so spectacular that people simply haveto go to the movies. High brightness, high frame rates, giant screens with high bit depth, better color saturation, laser projectors, high-gain screens — we need to make an experience that we can be proud of. I think we can make a movie experience that is so cool, so big and so grand, and has so much showmanship, that audiences have no other option than to go out to the movies. I think we can bring movies to new heights.” ●

toward the end of his life, many of us would, and literally did, give our blood for him. His last public appearance was at an event he loved — this one — in 1996. He upheld the highest standards of the Academy, and his legacy lives on in this [award]. I am truly honored to receive this medal.” Gordon E. Sawyer Award This award honors lifetime achievement in motion-picture science and technology. Douglas Trumbull has worked as a designer, director, inventor and entrepreneur. Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Blade Runner, among other pictures. Early in his career, Trumbull worked at a Los Angeles company called Graphic Film, where he produced a documentary about space flight for the New York World’s Fair that caught the eye of director Stanley Kubrick. Kubrick subsequently hired Trumbull to work on 2001. Trumbull went on to supervise visual effects for The Andromeda Strain, and he made his directorial debut with Silent Running. He earned Oscar nominations for his visual-effects work on Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star Trek – The Motion Picture and Blade Runner.
