Pace Welcomed to Society N ew active member Vince Pace, ASC was introduced to the artistic and technical challenges of cinematography at a young age, when he would help in his father’s shop, machining and building underwater housings. Pace went on to work closely with cinematographer Al Giddings on documentary features, including Titanic: Treasure of the Deep, and he returned to the subject of the famous sunken ship on James Cameron’s Titanic and Ghosts of the Abyss, serving as cinematographer (with D.J. Roller) on the latter. Pace first worked with Cameron on The Abyss, and soon thereafter launched Pace Technologies, through which Pace designed, manufactured and rented professional imaging equipment. In 2000, Pace began specializing in digital camera systems, including the Fusion 3D and 2-D and 3-D underwater systems. In 2011, after years of close collaboration, Pace and Cameron launched Cameron Pace Group, whose aim is to advance 3-D technology. Pace’s cinematography credits include Ocean Odyssey (with co-cinematographers Valerie Gill, Roller and Randy Wimberg), Aliens of the Deep and Expedition: Bismarck. For the latter, Pace shared an Emmy nomination with co-cinematographers Christopher Titus King, Neve Cunningham and Roller. Alongside a team of collaborators at CBS Sports, Pace also received the George Wensel Technical Achievement Award, a Sports Emmy Award, for the “2010 U.S. Open Tennis Championships in 3D.” Pace also provided additional photography for Avatar, Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008) and Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over. SOC Honors Negrin Sol Negrin, ASC received the Society of Camera Operators’ Lifetime Achievement Award for Distinguished Service to the Motion Picture Industry during the SOC’s Lifetime Achievement Awards Ceremony,

held in February. N egrin, whose credits include the feature Coming to America and such series as McCloud and Kojak, was nominated for five Emmy Awards, and he received the ASC Presidents Award in 2010 (AC March ’10). N egrin’s son, Michael Negrin, ASC, presented the SOC Award. This information was erroneously omitted from AC’s awards-season coverage in last month’s Clubhouse News. Cronenweth Addresses Createasphere Jeff Cronenweth, ASC participated in a keynote conversation during the recent Createasphere Entertainment Technology Expo at L.A. Center Studios. Moderated by Variety deputy editor Peter Caranicas, the conversation explored the cinematographer’s work behind the camera on music videos, commercials, and such features as Fight Club, The Social Network and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. “Witch City” Hosts Documentary Festival In early March, AC executive editor Stephen Pizzello flew back to his hometown of Salem, Mass., to attend the Salem Film Fest, an annual event focused on documentary filmmaking. He moderated the panel “Reframing Reality,” an in-depth discussion with cinematographers Ellen Kuras, ASC and Buddy Squires about the artistic and technological challenges involved in documentary shooting. While in Salem, Pizzello also judged the festival’s cinematography competition, awarding the top honor — the American Cinematographer Award — to Stories from Lakka Beach, a picturesque documentary about the residents of a small village located near Sierra Leone, Africa. The project was produced, directed and shot by Dutch filmmaker Daan Veldhuizen, who shot approximately 100 hours of footage, including interviews in both English and Creole. ●
