I

n January 1969, Massachusetts
Democratic Senator Edward "Ted"
M. Kennedy became the youngest
majority whip in Senate history. His
star was on the rise, fueled by the last
name he shared with late elder brothers
and statesmen Jack and Bobby -
whose political legacies hung like a
weight around Ted's shoulders.

Washington insiders were looking
ahead to the '72 presidential election,
and the pressure to run was building
within Kennedy's inner circle. However,
the brash young senator longed to
achieve greatness by doing things his
own way.
On July 18 of that same year,

Markham - hosted a boozy party at a
cabin in Martha's Vineyard for a group
of women that included Mary Jo
Kopechne, who had served on Robert F.
Kennedy's 1968 presidential campaign.
Whatever plans Ted and his brain trust
had for the future were waylaid that
night when Kennedy's Oldsmobile
