he ASC staged its 32nd ASC Awards for Outstanding
Achievement in Cinematography on Saturday, Feb. 17, in
the Ray Dolby Ballroom at the Hollywood & Highland
complex in Los Angeles, where more than 1,600 guests
saluted the art form's most accomplished practitioners.
The Awards ceremony was hosted by Turner Classic
Movies television cineaste Ben Mankiewicz, and the evening's
Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to ASC member
Russell Carpenter. "I want to express my gratitude to the
ASC," Carpenter said, "for bringing me into this community
of magicians and sorcerers - marvelous people who ... work
in a world that is pure alchemy and pure enchantment."
Also honored during the gala were actor-director
Angelina Jolie, who received the Board of Governors Award;
Stephen Lighthill, ASC, feted with the Presidents Award;
Alan Caso, ASC, who received the Career Achievement in
Television Award; Russell Boyd, ASC, ACS, who earned the
International Award; associate member Frieder Hochheim,
who took home the Bud Stone Award of Distinction; and
student filmmakers Favienne Howsepian and Logan Fulton,
recipients of the Andrew Lesnie Heritage Award, and Connor
Ellmann, who received the Haskell Wexler Student
Documentary Award. During the ceremony, the audience also
singled out ASC legend Owen Roizman for a standing
ovation, in recognition of his illustrious career and the
Honorary Academy Award he received a few months earlier.
Following the ceremony, Panavision sponsored a maxcapacity afterparty at the Society's venerable Clubhouse in
Hollywood, where guests reveled till the wee hours.
The evening before the awards gala, the Clubhouse was
the setting for the annual Nominees Dinner, sponsored by
Panavision and Kodak.
Six days prior, on Saturday, Feb. 10, the Society officially
kicked off the Awards celebration with a Sponsors Breakfast,
during which ASC President Kees van Oostrum and Society
member Natasha Braier, ASC, ADF unveiled the latest addition to the ASC Museum collection: the Mitchell BNC
camera used by Gregg Toland, ASC to shoot Citizen Kane and
many other classic motion pictures. The camera was gener-

ously donated to the ASC by director-cinematographer
James A. Contner, whose father, New York-based cinematographer J. Burgi Contner, ASC, owned the camera for decades
after Toland's passing in 1948 and used it to shoot numerous
TV series and commercials. The acquisition of this "Holy
Grail" was shepherded by ASC members Steve Gainer and
Roy H. Wagner.
Following the Sponsors Breakfast, the ASC opened the
Clubhouse gates and welcomed hundreds of students and
industry guests for the Open House, graciously sponsored by
Keslow Camera.
