Society Hosts Photo Gallery
The Society recently hosted the opening for an exhibition of still photography by
nine ASC members: Bill Bennett, Roger
Deakins, Shelly Johnson, George
Mooradian, James Neihouse, Antonio
Riestra, David Stump, Mandy Walker
and Alexander Witt. Displayed at the Clubhouse in Hollywood, the temporary exhibit
was curated by Paris Chong of Leica Gallery
LA and features five images by each photographer, with prints available for purchase
through the ASC's online store at
store.ascmag.com.

Deakins Wins Oscar, BAFTA
Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC recently
won the Academy Award for Best
Cinematography for his work on Blade
Runner 2049 (AC Dec., '17). Also nominated
for the cinematography Oscar were Rachel
Morrison, ASC, for Mudbound (AC Dec.
'17); Bruno Delbonnel, ASC, AFC, for
Darkest Hour (AC Jan. '18); Hoyte van
Hoytema, ASC, FSF, NSC, for Dunkirk (AC
Aug. '17); and Dan Laustsen, ASC, DFF,
for The Shape of Water (AC Jan. '18).
For Blade Runner 2049, Deakins also
took home this year's BAFTA Award for Best
Cinematography. Also nominated in the
category were Delbonnel; van Hoytema;
Laustsen; and Ben Davis, BSC, for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
Garcia Art Exhibition
Ron Garcia, ASC recently debuted
his solo multimedia art exhibition, "Dreams,
Reflections & Memories," at the Avenue 50
Studio in Los Angeles. The exhibition
features his sculptures, still photography and
photo paintings, as well as a retrospective of
his cinematography, including excerpts from
the 1971 Western Machismo: 40 Graves for
40 Guns.

Zydowicz Named
Promoter of Poland
Honorary ASC member Marek
Zydowicz, director and creator of the
American Cinematographer

Camerimage International Film Festival, was
recently awarded the title of "The Promoter
of Poland" by the Board of the Polish Promotional Emblem "Poland
Now" Foundation.
Krzysztof Przybyl, president of the foundation, expressed his
appreciation
for
Zydowicz's achievements in the field of
culture, and for the creation of one of the
largest film festivals in the world. The award
was presented to Zydowicz at CKK Jordanki
in Torun as part of the 25th edition of the
Welconomy Forum congress.
Society Welcomes Braier
New active member Natasha Braier,
ASC, ADF was born in Buenos Aires. She was
given the nickname "periscope" by her
parents, as she was always trying to get a
better view of the world outside her crib and
was fascinated with light. At the age of 10,
she borrowed her dad's Super 8 camera and
directed her first short film - a musical called
Do You Dance?, starring her sister - with her
father on cinematography duties and her
mother holding the light for interiors. Her
parents then bought her a still camera, and
she enrolled in her first photography class at
age 16. She completed a two-year degree in
black-and-white photography at the Escuela
de Fotografia Creativa. When she was 18, her
family moved to Spain, but she returned to
Argentina six months later to work in the
photo department of a magazine while
attending film school. She eventually returned
to Spain, then made her "pilgrimage" to
London to pursue a master's degree in cinematography at the National Film and Television School.
Braier's feature credits include Glue,
XXY, Somers Town, La Teta Asustada (The
Milk of Sorrow), The Rover (AC Jul. '14) and
The Neon Demon (AC Jul. '16).
