On the Table
For his first tabletop demonstration, Moss
brought out a plate full of fresh strawberries
set atop a piece of polished, simulated black
marble. Behind the fruit, the cinematographer had his team set up a 4'x8' sheet of white
acrylic, and behind that were four LiteGear
LiteMats. The acrylic - unlike a silk, muslin,
or other type of diffusion fabric - offers an
entirely textureless piece of heavy diffusion
that is perfect for creating specular highlight
reflections in products. He further diffused the
LiteMats by adding a layer of 250 diffusion between the sources and the plexi, to make sure
there were no hotspots. During the demonstration, the cinematographer experimented
with various levels of front-bounce fill with cut
black/white showcards that were secured to
flexible wire so they could quickly be set up on
the tabletop without the need for stands - a
technique often employed in product photography. He also added a spritz of water to help
increase the reflectivity of the strawberries, and
to introduce more specular highlights, rather
than rely on the fruits' diffusive skin.
Moss then moved to another product setup
with a bottle of Jack Daniel's Gentleman Jack
whiskey. He first demonstrated the product in
the same backlit configuration as the strawberries, but was dissatisfied with that look;
instead, he moved the camera 90 degrees and
turned the product so that it would be sidelit
from the plexi, creating a clean specular highlight down the edge of the bottle. To accentuate
