A SPECIAL SET OF SKILLS
Moss designs a beauty-lighting setup,
enlisting the services of actor Brittany Belt.
the product a bit more, Moss had the grip, Kevin
Coon, place a small piece of shiny gold-foil
showcard behind the bottle to reflect light back
through the amber whiskey. Yet as the flat look
of the reflection through the whiskey wasn't
quite right, the cinematographer asked Coon to
move the card a greater distance - about 6' -
behind the bottle, which allowed for more play
of light and shadow. The resulting look was a
bit like the highlights and shadows created by
sunlight on the bottom of a pool, providing a
sense of texture through the bottle while still
showcasing the deep amber of the whiskey.
He started with a gray seamless paper as a
backdrop, but then asked gaffer Brad Sargent
to remove the seamless, which revealed the
windows in the ASC Clubhouse bar behind the
setup. " The whiskey-bottle setup provided a
serendipitous moment, which happens often in
filmmaking, " he says. " I originally put a backdrop between us and the window, but I sensed
that if I could get rid of the backdrop and use
the window instead, which I did. We were balanced for tungsten light, but the daylight from
the window made the background highlights
go blue behind the warm light on the bottle,
and it looked nice reflecting on the marble. "
This fortuitous color contrast, which was far
out of focus in the background, provided Moss
with the opportunity to refine his composition.
" It's important to be open to the possibility of
change on set! " he says.
Moss then switched products, positioning a
small jar of Lanĉome moisturizer, which had a
metallic top and a blue/purple glass base. This
demo illustrated the struggles of working with
highly reflective products, in that they " see " reflections of everything around them - the camera, the location, the crew - all of which had to
be flagged out through the use of solids. Then,
to kick things up a notch, Moss brought in talent so he could operate a shot and tip up from
the product to a model. This led to the second
phase of his demonstration: beauty light.

Moss' first setup for his beauty-lighting
