“I have to say, I didn’t enjoy shooting in New Mexico very much — the seasons would change within the time it took to drink a cup of coffee. The light changed constantly throughout the day. I did my best to maximize our time by using Sunpath to figure out the approach for the day; we’d use Ultrabounce to soften the contrast when it was clear, or bring out a 60-by40-foot Half Grid when the winds weren’t raging. The weather was very trying. When we first arrived, there was 2 feet of snow on the ground, and we had to wait for it to melt to start shooting!” The rest of Thor was shot onstage at Raleigh Studios in Manhattan Beach, Calif. One of the sets built there was Asgard, and to underscore the mythological city’s magical quality, Zambarloukos decided to use no practical sources there at all. “We decided there would be the feeling of fire at night and a kind of magical glow during the daytime, but no visible sources,” he says. “I equated it to the great Renaissance paintings: there’s a window, and yes, there’s some kind of source, but the light has a kind of magical feel.” The show’s gaffer, Cory Geryak, recalls, “Early in prep, I walked into the office and found Haris holding a small Kino Flo over the model of the set of
