Whenever possible, Mindel
used Kodak Vision3 50D 5203 for day
exteriors, but amongst the buildings on
New York streets, where the winter
light quickly fades, he often switched
to Vision3 200T 5213 or Vision3
250D 5207 for more speed. (He shot
all interiors and night material on
Vision3 500T 5219.) "I always try to
work at a T2.82⁄3 with anamorphic
lenses," he notes. "I think that's a good
place to key. Any wider and it becomes
prohibitive for the focus pullers to do
good work."
On night scenes, he continues, "I
pushed [5219] to 1,000 ASA when I
didn't have enough stop for a zoom.
You don't notice any increase in grain
at all. It's just a way of not shooting the
zooms wide open. On these kinds of
films, with multiple cameras going, it's
much quicker and simpler to be able to
change sizes on the fly with zooms,
especially when you're shooting action
sequences."
In terms of style, "I was trying
- and I'm sure everyone who shoots
these movies says this - to give it the
comic-book look," he continues. "As a
