looked back at other movies where I'd
shot onstage and tried to play it as
exterior, and it just doesn't feel quite as
real."
Times Square serves as the
setting where Spider-Man first
confronts Electro, a powerful, luminescent nemesis. The villain has the
appearance of a bluish, cloud-to-cloud
lightning storm in humanoid form,
and the filmmakers had to figure out
how best to mimic that practically on
set. Almost by accident, the solution
came during some early camera tests
of KNB Effects' prosthetic makeup.
Some Litegear LEDs were tested with
the makeup, and film recorded an
intensified blue.
Electro strolls into Times
Square cloaked in a hoodie, and
Litegear LEDs were sewn inside the
hood and later painted out in post.
But, at one point, Electro has to lower
the hood and reveal himself. "For
that," Chen recalls, "we tested all these
devices that would hold LEDs in front
of his face, and at one point, we
thought we might go with a collar with
thin, flexible gooseneck contraptions
that we would have to paint out of
every shot, which would have been a
nightmare. Finally, I just asked Marc if
we could keep the hoodie up for the
entire sequence. He thought about it
and said, 'Yeah, that's kind of cool.'"
