[Laughs.]
That first shoot was when I realized I was witnessing something that I
wouldn't have believed if I wasn't looking
at it myself. I'm watching this guy run
two marathons a day essentially, with all
this incline and decline, and he's running
on chia smoothies, and avocadoes, and
veggie sushi, and all these plant-based
meals. I had four other people with me to
run three cameras and sound, and any
time we as the crew were tired, someone
would say, 'Scott's still running. Let's go.'
It was a hard-hitting way to enter the
project and to understand both the possibilities of what people can accomplish,
and why so many of the myths about diet
are just false. It was all unfolding right in

front of me - at a pace faster than I
could keep up with!
Behrens: You actually had to
chase Scott on large portions of the trail
with a full-size Movi.
Nolan: Yeah, I did a lot of Movi
work on that shoot. I was using a
custom-built [Freefly Systems] Movi
M15 with a Red Epic-W [Helium 8K]
or Epic Dragon [6K], and then I had a
Movi M10 with a Canon EOS-1D C.
It was a game of cat-and-mouse. I
could calculate his approximate running
speed, and then we'd leapfrog up to the
next bridge or trail that he would cross.
You can't ask a guy who's trying to break
a world record to repeat a shot. 'Oh,
sorry, I missed that - do you mind
running back and adding another 500

feet to your 46-mile day?' There were a
couple times when we spent 45 minutes
rigging the Movi on a cable cam, and I
was just putting the final touches on the
run for the camera, when all of a sudden,
zoom, he runs right by. There was nothing to do but say, 'All right, moving on.' I
called [production] and I said, 'I need to
hire a PA who can always be a half mile
or a mile up the trail so that we'll get a
radio call when Scott's coming.'
Before the cameras actually
started rolling, did the two of you have
any time together when you could
come up with a joint game plan?
Behrens: We were off to the races
so quick that Hunter and I never really
got to sit side by side and work out our
visual language. But Louie is very good
about communicating what he's looking
for visually. I would say Louie was the
visual glue between both of us.
Nolan: Yeah, I would second that
fully. The first mention of the film that I
heard was, 'We're going down to the
Appalachian Trail. This is happening
this week - get your stuff ready.' I was
like, 'What is this?' [Laughs.]
Behrens: I remember you got that
