Atomos Supports ProRes Raw
Atomos has announced support for
Apple's ProRes Raw format, which
combines the performance of ProRes with
the flexibility of raw video. The ProRes Raw
update is available free for Atomos'
Shogun Inferno and Sumo 19 devices.
The upgrade brings ProRes Raw and
ProRes Raw HQ recording, monitoring,
playback and tag editing to all owners of
Atomos Shogun Inferno or Sumo 19
devices. Once installed, it allows the
capture of raw images in up to 12-bit RGB,
direct from camera onto affordable SSD
media; eight popular cine cameras with
raw output - including Panasonic's AUEVA1 and VariCam LT, Sony's FS5 and FS7,
and Canon's C300 Mark II and C500 - are
supported, with more to follow. ProRes
Raw files can be imported directly into Final
Cut Pro 10.4.1 for editing, color grading
and finishing on Mac laptop and desktop
systems.
Shooting ProRes Raw preserves
dynamic range, with a 12-bit depth and
wide color gamut - essential for HDR
finishing. Atomos recorders allow for
increased flexibility in captured frame rates
and resolutions, with the ability to record
ProRes Raw up to 2K at 240 fps, or 4K at
up to 120 fps. Higher resolutions, such as
5.7K from the AU-EVA1, are also
supported.
Atomos' AtomOS 9 operating
system gives users the tools to work with
ProRes Raw in a portable device. Fast
connections in and out, and advanced HDR
screen processing means every pixel is accurately and instantly available for on-set
creative playback and review. Pull the SSD
out and dock to a Mac over Thunderbolt 3
or USB-C 3.1 for immediate postproduction.
Additionally, Atomos has partnered
with Nikon to bring creative professionals
the D850 Filmmaker's Kit with 4K Ninja
Flame 7" HDR monitor-recorder. This new

kit provides essential gear filmmakers need
to create UHD video in a one-box solution.
The Ninja Flame is a touchcontrolled camera-top HDMI video recorder
that records onto high capacity, affordable
SSDs from a variety of drive makers. The
recorder takes advantage of the Nikon
D850's full-frame potential by taking the
video image direct from the camera's 45.7megapixel back-side-illuminated (BSI)
CMOS image sensor and recording it in the
highest quality with visually lossless
compression. It records 4K UHD video in
4:2:2 for greater color accuracy, straight
into edit-ready Apple ProRes or AvidDNxHR
codecs. There is also a range of professional
video-monitoring tools, including waveform, vectorscope, false color, 1-1 and 2-1
magnification, and frame guides.
The D850 shoots video using the full
width of the full-frame sensor, so accurate
focus is critical, especially in 4K. Working
with the Ninja Flame's super-sharp, superbright 1920x1200-resolution screen means
users can get sharp images every time. The
Ninja Flame also expands the D850's audio
capabilities, with a 3.5mm mic jack, onscreen level meters, plus the ability to mix
between audio coming from the camera
over HDMI and from an external mic.
The Nikon D850 Filmmaker's Kit
includes the camera, Ninja Flame, and three
prime Nikkor lenses: the AF-S Nikkor 20mm
f1.8G ED, AF-S Nikkor 35mm f1.8G and
AF-S Nikkor 85mm f1.8G. The kit also
includes an additional battery, the ME-1
Stereo Microphone and the ME-W1 Wireless Microphone.
