Just as the industry we cover continues to evolve, so does AC.
This issue presents a new monthly department, Shot Craft
(page 14), which will offer insights on tools, techniques and
useful tricks for emerging cinematographers. Curated by
longtime contributor Jay Holben, the section will address the
needs of aspiring filmmakers who do not yet have access to
big-budget production technologies or processes. The magazine's feature coverage will continue to provide deep-dive
analysis of accomplished indie and studio projects, but we're
also making it a priority to reach out to readers whose kit is
more likely to include DSLRs and off-the-rack solutions than
large-format cameras, lighting trucks and more advanced
gear.
The debut installment of Shot Craft (which replaces
Production Slate as a front-of-the-book staple) compares the differences between cinema and
still lenses; offers professional tips from ASC members Lisa Wiegand, John Schwartzman and
Paul Cameron; and details the unique "sonic mnemonic" system employed by camera operator Geoffrey Haley.
We're hoping the monthly lessons presented in Shot Craft will inform and inspire young
filmmakers, sparking their passion while furthering the ASC's ongoing commitment to educational outreach. Of course, working pros can also find value in these pearls of wisdom. And, as
always, we're open to your suggestions on how to make this new section of the magazine as
relevant and compelling as possible.
On a related front, we're also proud to announce the launch of the completely
redesigned AC and ASC websites, which you can explore at ascmag.com and theasc.com. Our
former, single site has evolved into two online destinations offering updated and streamlined
designs; intuitive, easy-to-use functionality; and a wealth of material, both new and archived,
that will surely encourage visitors to bookmark our URLs as daily must-reads. You can switch
between sites with a single click to find content on the magazine side (including award-winning
editorial, online exclusives, filmmaker interviews, how-to video tutorials, blogs, podcasts, information on new products and services, classic AC articles, and more) or on the Society side (ASC
news, Clubhouse events, Technology Committee reports, Friends of the ASC content, video
interviews with members, and information on ASC Master Classes and the ASC Awards).

Mat Newman for their tireless efforts in bringing the sites online.
Here in the "print space," our July features continue the magazine's long tradition of
exceptional reporting. Mark Dillon's article on Wonder Woman ("A Warrior Rises," page 28)
offers commentary from ASC member Matthew Jensen and director Patty Jenkins about their
collaboration on one of the summer's most anticipated blockbusters; Rachael K. Bosley
addresses the techniques that Marshall Adams, ASC employs on the series Better Call Saul
("Darkness Gains Dimension," page 42); Patricia Thomson reveals how cinematographer Ari
Wegner and director William Oldroyd made the period drama Lady Macbeth on a true indie
budget ("Crimes of Passion," page 52); Matt Mulcahey lays out the strategies Lyle Vincent and
director Ana Lily Amirpour brought on location while shooting The Bad Batch ("Cannibal Run,"
page 60); and John Calhoun interviews Mathias Herndl, AAC about his work on the series
Genius ("Speed of Light," page 68).
