on a scissor lift that we could drive
around to place a very broad, strong
source wherever we needed it,” adds
Lee.
Another complicated set was the
Com-Pod, the area in the Jaeger’s head
that houses the two pilots. The pilots’
feet are engaged in an elliptical mechanism that controls the robot’s legs, and
their arms are attached to devices that
control the robot’s arms and hands.
Two Com-Pod sets were built and
placed on large gimbals. “They were
like amusement-park-ride simulators,”
says Del Toro. “The sets could shake
and vibrate and drop about 15 feet in an
instant. The actors were in for a ride!”
Navarro explains that color was a
vital component in the look of the

Com-Pod. “Every country builds its
own Jaeger, and we see six of them in
the movie, so we needed all six of them
to look different. We did this mainly by
giving each its own color palette, and
we decided to light with LEDs so we
could easily change colors as needed.”
However, he and Lee used mostly
theatrical LED fixtures rather than
LEDs designed specifically for motion
pictures. “We weren’t trying to emulate
what we could otherwise [achieve] with
tungsten,” notes Lee. “We wanted color
effects.”
They chose Chroma-Q Color
Force 72 LED batten ground-row
fixtures, which they had built into the
Com-Pod sets to illuminate panels with
color wash. These fixtures use a mix of

red, green, blue and amber LEDs to
create various colors. They also made
extensive use of LiteGear LiteRibbons
in the Com-Pods. All fixtures were
connected to a dimmer board for full
DMX control over intensity and color
selection.
In other sets, in place of regular
fluorescent tubes, Lee used tubes from
Mac Tech LED “fluorescents.” He
notes, “Those are really helpful in

certain situations. The throw characteristics are different than those of regular
fluorescents; it has more punch and
directionality, but also the cool, soft feel
of a fluorescent. They also have a very
thin profile, so they were easy to tuck
into places around the set.”
Because the Jaegers fight the
Kaiju in the water, the Com-Pod sets
were constantly hit with hundreds of
gallons of water per minute. “This
