neering, chose to accentuate the positive at
a time when filmmakers are inundated
with a bewildering array of technology.
"There's a unique opportunity in optics
that we've never had before, and through
the choice of different types of lenses and
different types of sensors, you're going to
get the greatest type of control you've ever
had," Sasaki explained. "In fact, it's so
strong that you're going to be able to create
a defining look that's going to be able to
survive the entire imaging chain."
Sasaki seized the opportunity to
cover a wide range of topics, from how
optics influence aesthetics, to the unique
properties of anamorphic and what he
called the "Foundations of Imaging":
perspective, magnification, and resolution
and contrast.
Following lunch, the delegates traveled to Technicolor in Hollywood, where
they were shown a presentation of HDR
processes. The discussion here focused on
recent technological solutions - developed by Technicolor's Research and
Innovation division - that extend the
creative intent of cinematographers and
directors through the downstream lifecycle
of their projects.

The attendees then returned to
the Clubhouse for an open discussion
titled "The Role Your Society Plays in
Your Workplace Environments."
Moderated by Ron Johanson, ACS and
Richard Bluck, NZCS, the session
touched on a broad range of topics,
including safety issues and opportunities
for women, minorities and students.
Bluck noted, "We as societies must look
after the people we're working with and
look after ourselves."
One of the most compelling
discussion subjects may have been saved
for last, when the five women cinematographers in the room - Natasha
Braier, ADF; Stephanie Martin, ADF;
Elen Lotman, ESC; Nina Kellgren,
BSC; and Claire Pijman, NCS - were
given the opportunity to talk about their
experiences as minority figures within
their respective cinematography societies. "I think the only way things are
going to change is that we lead by example, by letting other women see us working," said Martin. "I've always tried to
avoid looking at it as being a 'female
cinematographer,' because I do the same
work that you guys do."

Lotman pointed to her own experiences apprenticing for Christopher
Doyle, HKSC, on a shoot in Thailand.
"Chris, as you know, is no typical cinematographer," she noted. "I came to
understand that the only thing about
being the best in the world is being
myself, and that goes for all of you, too.
At that point, I stopped trying to be a
middle-aged man and became what I
am today."
After a brief presentation of
regional reports, the ICS officially
wrapped with a closing-night reception.
The next morning would see the delegates traveling back home, where they
could share all the information they'd
gleaned with their compatriots.
"It was wonderful to meet so
many colleagues from abroad," Goodich
reflects. "The delegates' openness and
willingness to communicate was key.
Clearly, great work is being done all over
the globe."
