Costello maneuvers her way into position for shooting.
Costello confirms that the traditional way of life "never yielded a great
amount of money, and so it wasn't seen
as something we could stay around
and do. There was no value put on it,
even though that connection shaped
us."
Eventually, she left for the wildly
contrasting world of information technology in financial trading rooms
across the globe, working in the Far
East, the Americas and Europe.
"Because I was contracting, I was
allowed to take vast amounts of time
off. I traveled alone, going into the
remotest areas to meet indigenous
people, to witness their landscapes and
their way of life. That's when I developed the love of photography."
Costello admits that her "background isn't in film at all. I suppose I
developed an eye for taking pictures of
people in their environment. I always
framed pictures well enough, looking
for backlight or sidelight, or for
pictures that have the most emotional
impact or would be true to the characters I'd meet."
While traveling, Costello married
documentarian - and eventual Silver
Branch producer - Ken O'Sullivan of
Sea Fever Productions. They returned
to Ireland and settled down to start a
family. But she was troubled by how
things had changed in the country.
"When I had left Ireland, 25 or 30 cows
would walk up and down my village
twice each day for milking. When I
returned, the cottages of the main street
had been removed, and there were traffic lights, multiple housing estates,
shops, and a visible drug problem in
our village. I was horrified at the
