the mosaic floor design that I shot the
killing in?
Tavoularis: Yes.
Coppola: I have gone into detail
in, I will call it, 'Effect No. 6,' and that's
in the special effects memo. But it goes
into the ratio of how we are going to
blow the guy's head off and the pink
mist in the air. That will all be done in
tremendous detail.
Willis: Shouldn't the pink mist
come from Sollozzo's head, rather than
the -
Coppola: It's going to be
Sollozzo's head as soon as Sollozzo gets
there. There is going to be a pink mist.
It's wholly unrealistic. I think it's great.
The operation, from that point on, is
that pink mist in the air.
(Later)
Willis: That killing, the tableau
thing again, it's a reprise in style; but I
think it will work in the killing. But if,
for instance, you do one whole master
tableau in the restaurant - maybe the
master goes for ten minutes. Because he
comes back from the can, right?
Coppola: You won't be able to get
the effects in the long shot, but you can
go right up into the killing and the
excitement. So that the whole thing is
played in that long-shot tableau thing,
and that the killings themselves -
One of my first conceptions of
the killings to take - took place in five
or ten seconds; but because of the attention [to] detail, we pulled it apart,
because we shot the different elements.
What may have taken ten seconds
would take a minute for us to show it.
I had the use of space in this
scene, that they would be sitting in the
middle of it. So there is plenty of space
and it would be a well-lighted restaurant. Again, an old idea of taking the
violence into the lights. The killings are
always in the dark corner; and to take it
into the middle of a well-lighted family
restaurant, which they would have
selected anyway, to get away from - it
would be very well-lighted in a way.
And then they go out and [when]
Michael gets into that car, Michael
vanishes from the story altogether. ➣
