because the beam would feel like it was
coming from a stationary position.
"To make it work," he continues,
"we stacked two eight-foot-by-fourfoot Martin LED panels on either side
of the elevator. We loaded up the original previs for the sequence and
programmed it to run constantly, and
the effect looks just like elevator floors
rushing by." Due to the fine detail posed
by the elevator's wire-mesh walls and
the Alexa's Bayer-pattern color filter
array's heightened sensitivity to green,
the scene was shot against greenscreen,
as opposed to the bluescreen used elsewhere during the production.
The elevator scene concludes
when the ceiling of the shaft opens to
reveal the harsh daylight of the Glade,
where Thomas meets the other Gladers.
To show Thomas emerging from the
elevator into the Glade, the production
had to dig into the ground at a cow
pasture about 45 minutes north of
Baton Rouge. The elevator was covered
with a black velvet butterfly and,
because the sky was overcast, a 4K
Xenon was used to create strong shadows on Thomas' face. "I shot Thomas
handheld during his ascent and also as

he emerges from the elevator," Chediak
explains. "When he gets out and starts
running away from the shaft, we had
Stephen Campanelli follow after him
on a little electric cart."
To control the sunlight for the
day exteriors in the Glade, the filmmakers used a variety of large flags and silks.
"We parked huge Pettibone construction cranes around the tree lines, each
hoisting one or two 30-by-30 silk
frames," says Chediak. "It looked
impressive and created a wonderful key

light we could control.
"It was a challenging, hot and
humid Louisiana summer," Chediak
continues. "We even had a couple of
torrential rains during the shoot, but we
normally just waited them out for four
or five hours rather than leaving the
location."
As Thomas surveys the Glade, he
quickly takes note of the surrounding
stone walls of the Maze. For lighting
purposes, Chediak recalls, "I wanted the
Maze-wall doors to be completely
