Second Annual Ball Brilliant Success
American Society of Cinematographers Sponsor Notable Event at the
Ambassador Hotel, Attended by the Elite of the
Screen World.

It is all over, but the memory will
rernam.
Never in the annals of the
motion picture industry in Los Angeles has there been such a wonderful ball! Saturday evening, Jan. 29,
the Al\lJ!RICi\N SOCIETY OF CIN£MA'rOGR.'\PH£RS gave
their secoud annual ball in the Ambassador Hotel.
This was the first function in the
new hotel in which the industry has
been directly interested, and it was
most enthusiastically supported. The
first thing noticed upon entering the
ball room was the emblem of the
Society thrown
upon a painted
screen on the platform opposite the
entrance
door.
All decorations
centered in this feature. The orchestra was placed on the side under
the balconv. and refreshments
were
served in the corresponding position
on the opposite side of the room.
The pillars, balconies and chandeliers were hunc with festoons of'
sr eens, and sin~ilar hangings from
the lights and balconies softened the
whole room.
Mingled with the
green were the soft, warm colors
of acacia branches and pink carnatiO'1S.

it was a question who was the hapr-iest, the satisfied guests or the delighted hosts.
A 'iter the guests began to arrive
it would have been difficult to tell
whether it was a motion picture
studio, a social fUllction of special
importance or a gathering of film
htl;;;:iness men. The tr1.1th ,"vas, it
was a fatherinf! of busy people enjoying- themselves
to tJ1e utmost.

There
was good fellowship
and
cheer until the wee small hours.
The music was all that could be
wished, charming in its rhythm, and
generouslY given in response to each
encore.
During the dancing lights
were lowered and colored
rays
played on the gliding couples, with
the witchery that always comes with
shifting color. This one feature will
never be forgotten.

A Her the guests had settled down
to an evening of dancing, Grauman's usherettes
entered the ball
r00111 with baskets of favors and
varicolored
balloons which were
distributed and the fun began. At
this time Max Fisher and his jazz
orchestra took their position on the
nlatform Clncl after a short introdllction
from Roscoe
Arbuckle,
who took the lead, the music began.
A darned with paper hats, tossing
the balloons and throwing the paper
streamers, the dancers took the floor
fOl' another
two hours.
Last but by no means least of the
factors which entered into the success of the event were the wonderful gowns worn by the ladies. Such
a clisnlay is rarely seen and no description could do it justice. ,A, fter
all is said it is the guests which
make or 111ar a social event.
All
present gi ve most enthusiastic accounts of meeting- cQngenial people
in a bealltifull ball 1'00111, dancing to
compelling music.

PERSONAL
Me. J. A. Dubray has completed
filming" A Certain Rich Man" with
P. B. Hampton and begun shooting
"The Man of the Forest," a western
of the out-of-doors.
In the cast are
Carl Ganvool't in the title role;
Claire Adams and Robert lVIcKim.
A note following a scene in \vhich
a mountain lion has a bit to play
with the hero reads:
"If the lion
1s not all that the tr~iner claims for
it, some part of this scene, or some
part of the actor playing it \~Iill be
rearranged."
A thrill is in sight!
1\111'. Robert S. Kewhal-d has been
engaged to photograph the next picture for David Butler at the Hollywood Studios.
