Brotherhood Idea Carried Out
Gentlemen:
The little craft co-operation
has been launched.
The old rut has been abandoned.
Stormy days may be ahead,
but to every cloud of every
stormy day there is a silver
lining.
Friendship; Co-operation. That
is the word; the phrase which
entered however slightly into
the understanding of the two
greatest pillars of the motion
picture industry, the cinematographer and the director.
The launching was accomplished Saturday night; August 6, at the Hollywood studios
when some of the foremost directors in the country became
the guests of the American Society of Cinematographerscameramen - if the French
equivalent of the word be too
unwieldy.

Shor-t Speeches
Alvin Wyckoff in an oration
which seemed to contain his
very heart and soul emphasized
these facts, saying the friendship between the camerman and
his director should almost approach adoration.
William D. Taylor in answer
to Mr. Wyckoff's speech .could
only say, "I echo the words of
the previous speaker," and then
lead three rousing cheers for the
cameramen.
Some
Doings
The affair was staged at the
Hollywood Studios. on the famous Omar Khayyam set, the
domain of Ferdinand Pinney
Earle, amid, of course, an atmosphere Persian, Moorish and
what-not.
The guests upon arrrving
garbed themselves to fit the
scene, some of them going in for
nhargyles, those long- tubed,
water purifying, all Havana,
wrapper things with which the
Persians of old were wont to
smoke themselves all up, in
much the same fashion that
Messrs, Swift, Armour et al. of
our present day are wont to
smoke (we speak not of actors
so we says) hams.
The directors and cameramen
broke bread and gnawed beefsteak together in this quaint old
atmosphere.
Entertainment
De Luxe
They were entertained. Slim
Whitman left no stone unturned
as chairman of the entertainment committee.
They saw
dancing which stirred even the
most blase director and the
equally blase camera sharks,
for what the director
has
looked upon during his career
of producing, so has the cameraman.
They heard
singing,
which if not ready for the Metropolitan Opera House, was full
of pep and vinegar and that was
what they wanted.
Get r.rogether Idea
The idea of the affair was to
get together. in the spirit of
friendship, the directors and the
cameramen.
The cry of today is for better
pictures; more artful creations;
not merely five thousand, seven
thousand or say ten thousand
feet of action film, interspersed
with more or less blatant subtitles as guide posts to the understanding of action; but films
that shall tell artfully, dexterously and concisely a story of
life or a set of life's incidents.

Heretofore cameramen and
directors
have .been
as
two
tribes forced into contiguity by
the very nature of their professions, but each actually living
outside the others'
borders;
each thinking insular thoughts;
scarcely any two of them bonded together in the great aim of
turning out not merely good pictures but the BEST.
Hence the idea of the get together; the cameramen as hosts,
eager to offer hospitality and
sincere in their efforts to do
their double bit for the glory of
their profession and the betterment of the industry.
