adapted with a double hydraulic sys¬
tem to lift a horizontal camera plat¬
form with an inclination of 30° maxi¬
mum. A unique type of dolly will oper¬
ate at the side of the Olympic swim¬
ming pool. It will move smoothly on
tubular rails and can be electrically
operated at varying speeds in order
to maintain the exact pace of the
swimmers. There will be two under¬
water camera installations in the pool
to photograph details of water-polo,
diving and the swimmers' styles. How¬
ever, these will not operate during
the actual competitions.
Four jet helicopters, equipped with
Tyler Vibrationless Camera Mounts will
be used for aerial filming of the Open¬
ing and Closing ceremonies, the Mara¬
thon Race, Cycling Races and Yachting
in Acapulco.
Color negative processing will be
done in Mexico, with several labs co¬
ordinated to rush-process dailies in
the form of 2-perforation contact
black and white prints, which will be
projected and edited using special
equipment adapted to the half-frame
format.
Contact work-prints will be used to
edit a master version of the docu¬
mentary with a running time of ap¬
proximately four hours. Later, in Hol¬
lywood, Technicolor will make the 4perforation anamorphic Techniscope
blow-ups, from which a two-hour ver¬
sion will be edited for theatrical re¬
lease. English, French and Spanish
sound-track versions of this cut will be
made, with all composite release
prints by Technicolor. It is expected
that these prints will be available for
theatrical release in about two months
following the conclusion of the Games.
Individual cameramen will attempt
to compose their shots so that the
main action will occur in the center of
the frame. In this way a 16mm tele¬
vision version can be extracted from
the original Techniscope format with¬
out the necessity of scanning the
frame. For editing this version special
16mm masks will be installed in Mo¬
violas to isolate the center portion of
the frame.
Operating directly from the Olym¬
pic Village, where the camera crews
will be headquartered, this reporter
will provide complete on-the-spot cov¬
erage of the technical aspects of the
filming for AMERICAN CINEMATOGRA¬
PHER readers. ■
