solved to our satisfaction. Super 8,
among our customers who I think are
highly representative of the industry,
is rapidly monopolizing the field.
A year ago the split was about
60-40-today it has reversed itself.
In the future there will be less and
less demand for standard format 8mm
prints, and this will be in the relatively
near future. So, this is one question
that is answered. All of our future
planning-all of our construction, en¬
gineering and research-is based on
the acceptance of super 8. Certainly,
there is no question as to color and
black-and-white. The cost factors are
such that there is very little to choose.
So, all print production will be done
in color, and to us, that is another
question that has been resolved.
How are films to be produced for
ultimate release in 8mm? We have
answered this question to our own sat¬
isfaction-they will be produced in
16mm. Why? Because virtually all the
equipment in production houses, lab¬
oratories, in-plant operations, govern¬
mental facilities, are in 16mm form.
There exists no professional 8mm pro¬
duction equipment, and I cannot con¬
ceive of manufacturers developing this
kind of equipment, for the simple rea¬
son that no market will exist. The cost
of camera raw stock in film produc¬
tion is insignificant in our total costs.
Production, itself, will be relatively
inexpensive when we consider the
number of prints that will be made to
serve this huge market. It is happen¬
ing right here in our own laboratory-
16mm print orders of 50 to 100 are
increasingly the norm. 8mm print or¬
ders are now starting at 100 and
going up thru the thousands. So, you
can see that the production costs, as
they will be amortized, are going to
become less and less the determining
factor as to whether a motion picture
is done. Films produced for ultimate
use in 8mm form will be produced not
as we have traditionally done, but
with entirely different ground rules-
cost is going to be important. Yes, but
not the determining factor. The de¬
termining factor will be ultimate use
and the ultimate uses are going to be
so important and so universal that all
else is secondary.
What about reel to reel projection,
or a cartridge load system? There are
