We have film stocks that make it
possible to put a high quality usable
image on the screen. We have pro¬
jectors that are inexpensive enough
and reliable enough and convenient
enough for the market to use. On top
of that, we can successfully put sound
on 8mm-width film. In addition to this
technical capacity, we have a market
that is demandingly receptive to this
medium. To use my earlier simile, the
8mm market is 8 V2 months pregnant.
This is not to say that we don't have
problems-we've got lots of them. But
the problems we have are very solv¬
able, and most of them are in the
process of being solved right now.
The questions of whether standard
8 or super 8; magnetic sound or opti¬
cal sound; are really unimportant in
the broad sense-but they are doggoned important to those of us imme¬
diately concerned, because we have
to know what the market is going to
require. We have to know what equip¬
ment to build, what equipment to buy,
what equipment to recommend to our
managements. These things will work
out. We, at Calvin Productions, have
opinions-we have expressed them
rather forcefully from time to time, to
most of the manufacturers and deci¬
sion makers in this industry and will
likely continue to do so. There will be
mistakes made. We think some un¬
necessary ones are being made now
and more will be made in the future.
Our jobs are to minimize these mis¬
takes and make sure our own indi¬
vidual companies, groups or organiza¬
tions make as few as possible.
When Eastman Kodak introduced
the super 8mm format, there was much
questioning as to whether it would be
successful-whether the standard for¬
mat would be outmoded eventually,
or whether we were going to be stuck
with two different formats of the same
width film. We were asking this ques¬
tion like everyone else because we
had a vested interest. We had print¬
ers that were designed for standard
format film and immediately we were
faced with the decision as to what our
customers were going to demand.
We did the only thing we could-
we prepared to handle the super 8
format and at the same time, main¬
tain our capacity to handle the stand¬
