keep in mind that 8mm optical hard¬
ware has only been around for about
the last year-we have had magnetic
for over 15. But, we are not prepared
to make a commitment on the basis
of that trend, as yet. We are offering
and encouraging both.
We are not going to get into a dis¬
cussion of equipment-suffice it to say
that there is good equipment already
on the market and lots more in the
pipelines. We offer it all through our

subsidiaries.
Your
particular
choice of projection medium will de¬
termine how you proceed with your
production and systems planning. As
we recognize, there are factors for
and against all of the various systems
but they are identified and now spe¬
cific enough to allow us to make logi¬
cal, rational decisions.
We who are in the laboratory busi¬
ness have to recognize that a whole
new dimension has been introduced
into our business, just as 16mm sup¬
plemented and then created a totally
new industry over and above 35mm.
The 8mm laboratory, more and more,
will be a manufacturer. We will have
whole assembly lines doing nothing
but personalizing, packaging, and
shipping the output of 1,000-foot-aminute printing monsters.
We are going to have warehousing
problems and inventory problems that
we have never had to face before.
The laboratory will become the distri¬
bution and control point for these new
projects. For our part, we are taking
steps now, and have for the past year
been preparing for this. We have
equipment in production-our design
and systems people are hard at work
-overall expansion plans are near¬
ing approval. But we, like the rest of
the laboratory industry, are too far
behind. We are working hard to catch
up.
Equipment manufacturers must think
in terms of simplicity of design and
economies that large scale production
runs will afford them. They must stand¬
ardize for interchangeability and re¬
liability.
There is only one missing element.
That is the vision and imagination
typified by people like all of us in this
room. The people who are responsi¬
ble for teaching, training, motivating
-you and literally thousands more
like you must recognize the potential
of all of these elements that are com¬
ing together now, and determine ways
to use them effectively and massively.
