Both versions feature the same
method of calculating the distance be¬
tween subject and camera. The movie
maker simply sights the camera at the
feet of the person (or base of the ob¬
ject) being photographed so that a
horizontal line in the viewfinder is
exactly on the subject's feet.
By pressing and releasing the con¬
trol button, a reading of the distance
in feet is recorded on a direct-reading
scale built into the camera body.
With FOCUS-MATIC, accurate dis¬
tance measurement and accurate fo¬
cusing, requisites for sharp motion pic¬
tures, are now available in easy to
use automatic or manual versions.
FOCUS-MATIC uses principles of
trigonometry to achieve its precise
measurement of distance, with the
angle of downward tilt of the camera
being a key factor.
