eye" bombs-those with pop-out fins
which act as air brakes-the depres¬
sion is only 5 to 10 degrees because
the plane comes in lower.
Lenses
range
from
25mm
to
12.5mm. Again, the choice is dictated
by the plane's customary distance
from target when it releases its bomb
load. The F-100, for example, would
tend to be equipped with the 25mm,
while the F-105, which flies faster and
higher, usually gets the wider angle.
Besides the forward-looking N-9
and the aft-looking Millikens, Air
Force fighter-bombers are also some¬
times equipped with a strike camera,
the 70mm. Fairchild with a 3-inch
lens. Colonel Warndorf described this
as solely an intelligence tool, as op¬
posed to the other two, which docu¬
ments the results of bombing and
strafing runs.
The 70mm camera has a rotating
prism, which can be set to oscillate
four to eight times a second across an
exposure slit. The aperture is auto¬
matically varied by a sensor as light
conditions fluctuate.
Originally, the oscillating camera
principle was used for mapping vast
areas. But then the mounting was al¬
tered from the horizontal to the ver¬
tical, so it provides a sweep from
horizon to horizon.
Colonel Warndorf said films from
the 70mm camera formerly took 20 to
30 days to process, a time lag which
made them virtually worthless. By
then, he explained, any enemy con¬
centrations of men or materiel, any
convoys or gun emplacements had
probably been moved.
But today, he continued, lab tech¬
nicians in the field can produce a
positive print 40 minutes after they
get the raw film. After the print is
dry, it is covered with clear plastic to
protect the emulsion.
Such speedy processing is done
with an Eastman Kodak Bimat process
on equipment manufactured by Mark
Systems Co. of Santa Clara, Califor¬
nia. The positive is simply pulled away
from the negative. Then the latter can
be used to make conventional prints.
In addition to front-looking N-9s
mounted in pods or blisters, some Viet¬
nam war planes also carry N-9s in the
cockpit. These can be mounted to
shoot through the gunsight or they
can be positioned to record the im¬
ages and data on closing and firing
that appear on radar scopes.
